Where to Shop for Price and Quality - Fruit and Vegetables

My experience Monday this week on a visit to our local major supermarket to buy a few zucchinis for the evening meal was to put it bluntly, a price gouge. I won't mention any names but one of the two majors. It doesn't matter which one as they behave the same way.

There are some very good shopping alternatives. Some are bigger players and some are small. We mostly shop for fruit and vegetables at a local dedicated fruit and vegetable shop. Our experience is fruit and vegetable prices at that shop are normally half the price of the two majors with good quality produce. For example, the  zucchini i bought on Monday was double the price of our local fruit and vegetable shop.

My wife often compares the prices. We shopped Wednesday this week for our weeks supply and compared prices. The price for the same goods at the major supermarket was double the price from our local fruit and vegetable shop.

Here is the list:

grape tomato pkt 1.98
3.90
pineapple x 2 4.00
7.80
snow pea .123Kg 1.84
3.69
red capsicum .343kg 1.71
5.11
green beans .373kg 1.86
2.57
broccolini .618kg 2.48
3.00
pear 1.9kg 2.81
6.65

Total 16.68
32.72

I know the major supermarkets offer convenience and a very pleasant shopping experience but gee we pay for it. They also create many jobs and good returns for investors which is good. But, in the current social and economic environment, if you find yourself in a situation where you need to tighten the financial belt, then you may need to look for alternatives. They are out there.
